The National Press Club Address yesterday was presented by Professor Allan Fels, AO, Chair of the National Mental Health Commission. Professor Fels spoke about the need for radical changes in the delivery of early intervention and community support.

Professor Fels highlighted the impact that greater committment to mental health could have on the national economy.  Improving mental health services, focussing on early intervention and community support would have a bigger impact on the economy than other measures such as tax reform.

The address is available online for the next month, and gives a valuable summary of the economic case to be made for the recommendations made by the National Mental Health Commission Report that was released for government last December.

Professor Fels concluded by saying that the Commission and the sector would be looking for a detailed response from all parties prior to the next election.
