In 2014, the Victorian Mental Health Carers Network was re-launched as Tandem – the peak body for Mental Health Carers in Victoria.
The Network began informally in 1994, with the support of four organisations; Carers Victoria, the Schizophrenia Fellowship (now Wellways), SANE Australia and ARAFEMI (now part of MIND Australia).
The Network initiated Carer Conferences, which drew an enormous response and provided a chance for mental health carers to voice their strong concerns about the mental health system. Following the fourth Carer Conference in 2000, membership of the Network was widened to include different types of organisations working with carers, as well as expanding the number of carer representatives.
By 2003, the Network's activities and aims had increased, and were proving difficult to sustain solely on the basis of members’ voluntary time. The Network was auspiced by ARAFMI Victoria, until it became incorporated in 2009, and a project worker was employed on a part-time basis to support the activities.
